The engagement letter is the opening of the matter record

When the letter is countersigned, the matter moves automatically to Active status. The signed letter, all delivery timestamps, and the countersignature confirmation are logged permanently to the matter record. The assigned attorney receives handoff notification with full context: client, matter type, billing structure, and any prior notes from intake.
